Coloratura soprano, native of Gatineau, Québec, known for her uniquely clear and agile voice, Marie-Claire Fafard-Blais has sung in Canada and in Europe, both in operas and recitals. During season 2010-2011, she was a member of Opera Lyra Ottawa’s Opera Studio; she won the studio annual competition’s Opera Studio Award and the Audience Favorite Award. The same season, she sang as a soloist with the Cantata Singers of Ottawa and with Le Choeur classique de l’Outaouais, at the Ottawa Viennese Opera Ball and gave recitals in several foreign embassies. Since she relocated to Montréal in 2012, Marie-Claire has sung with Théâtre d’art lyrique de Laval, Compagnie baroque Mont-Royal, Ensemble Énigme, Opera da Camera, Opéra Immédiat, Opéra Qu’on Sert and Atelier lyrique de Chambly. Her operatic repertoire includes Despina (Cosi fan tutte - Mozart), Königin die Nacht (Die Zauberflöte – Mozart), Sophie (Werther – Massenet), Frasquita (Carmen – Bizet), Véronique (Véronique - Messager) and Gabrielle (La vie parisienne – Offenbach).

An accomplished recitalist passionate about French mélodies, Marie-Claire has given several recitals in the past few years, including a French melodies recital at Salle Jean-Despréz in Gatineau during season 2014-2015 of Les Concerts Ponticello. During spring 2015, she sang the role of Véronique (Véronique – Messager) with TALL and the role of Frasquita (Carmen – Bizet) with Opéra Immédiat. In October 2015, she performed, with Opera da Camera, the roles of Sandmännchen and Taumännchen in Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel. More recently, she sang as a soloist in Saint-Saëns’s Oratorio de Noël with Choeur classique de l’Outaouais and with Choeur La Muse Héritage Musical in Montréal. During spring 2016, she will be singing the role of Giannetta in Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore with Opéra Immédiat in Montréal, a recital with Giancarlo Scalia at Centre Leonardo da Vinci in Montréal and Villa-Lobos’ Bachianas Brasileiras No5 with the Conservatoire de Gatineau’s Cellos Ensemble in Gatineau.

Marie-Claire Fafard-Blais holds a bachelor in voice from Université de Montréal and a master in voice from the University of Ottawa. Her previous teachers include Yolande Parent, Sandra Graham, Laurence Ewashko and William Lewis. Since 2012, Marie-Claire has been working with soprano Julie Daoust. In June 2014, she participated in the French melodies intensive program at Vancouver Internal Song Institute. She also participated, in February 2016, in New Opera 101, Songbook VI, a masterclass and recital based program organized by Tapestry Opera in Toronto.
